Driving Licence
To hire a vehicle in Uganda you will need to produce either a Ugandan driving permit, or your own national driving licence. As always, take a photocopy too, just in case of disaster. If you go without your licence, and find yourself needing to acquire one, it is possible to take a Ugandan test. Be warned, however, that the test is often little more than a quick drive and a reverse between four poles - followed by paying the 'unofficial' fee. Whether or not you pass the test, a permit is very unlikely to come your way until the 'fee' has been paid. Whilst this may sound easy - just remember the level of training all those other road users have received...
Vehicle Documents
If you hire, or purchase, a vehicle it is a legal requirement to have the certificate of insurance and the vehicle log book available at all times. Heavy fines can result from no insurance or not being able to prove that you have insurance. Don't drive a hire vehicle until you've got these documents, and don't take anyone's word for it that they are in the hire company's safe!
Professional and Work Documents
If you intend to seek work, stay for a long time, or take part in a specialist activity, you should first check with the relevant authorities to ascertain what documentation you may need to produce. Check the Ugandan Dept of Immigration web site for details of documentation required for work permits, student passes (to study in Uganda), residence applications, etc.
