Mbale is a town in south eastern Uganda and the chief town of the Mbale District. It lies 190 km (120 mi.) northeast of Kampala, on theTororo Pakwach railway near Mount Elgon<. It is known for its limited nightlife, and has a clock tower in the centre of town. Its 1991 census population was 53,634. Mbale is home to the Islamic University in Uganda, as well as the Moses synagogue around which most of the Abayudaya live. The population includes members of the ethnic group, mainly the Bamasaaba and Bagisu.
The town has a bus park, and a couple of main taxi parks, both 10 minutes walk from the bus park. Tourist facilities are limited although Mbale is a stopping over place for people on their way to Mount Elgon and / or Kenya. Expect taxi vehicles to be more poorly maintained than in Kampala, and much more over crowded.
