Roads and Road Travel

The taxi park in Kampala. Hundreds of white Toyota minibuses crowd together in the taxi parks where they remain until full and ready to leave. Each taxi will have a sign next to it showing the final destination, but unlikely to list 'stops' en route. You will have to ask and anyone of a dozen people will then guide you to the right vehicle. Although licensed for 14, the taxi driver will probably manage to fit 18 to 20 people in before he sets off, and the fair will be handed to the driver's mate before you get off the minibus.

Check destinations and prices before you start, and don't expect a whole seat to yourself. Even the gaps on the floor between seats will become occupied. The crowding means you may find it hard to move, either to get cash from a pocket or to get back off the minibus, so make sure your money is somewhere to hand, and that the driver knows where you want him to stop!
